18 Month Check Up

Grace had her 18 mo. check up today and I thought now would be a good time to do a run down of our little hot shot!

Grace...
*can point to her eyes, ears, hair, teeth, fingers, toes, belly, nose
*can run, climb and jump with both feet off the ground
*loves to read.... still
*knows the motions to at least 3 Wiggle songs and will do them randomly throughout the day. She must be singing in her head!
*knows exactly what to do to get in time-out :) And will sit there for her full minute.
*understands almost everything we say
*30 lbs - 95%ile
*34 inches - 95%ile BIG GIRL!!!
*signs "more" while making the mmmm sound
*shakes her head no and yes when asked questions
*loves all animals
*loves to cuddle and sit on your lap, but it has to be on her terms
*can do the motions for Itsy Bitsy Spider and Wheels on the Bus
*is allergic to something that we haven't figured out yet. She is on Zyrtec right now and has an allergist appt in Nov.

The things that worry me...
*Isn't talking at all right now. She has had words come and go, but the only one that really stuck was "hi". Now she barely says that. I know she hears fine and understands everything. She has even stopped doing her animal sounds when asked. She almost looks annoyed and turns away when she can tell I'm trying to get something out of her. She even shakes her head no sometimes. She does babble, but is limited on her sounds. Lately, she only really uses the letters m, g, d. Has anyone else had a similar situation?

*Will not warm up to others outside of immediate family. She does feel more comfortable with our neighbors due to seeing them all the time. She will take their hand if she wants something, but doesn't really let her guard down. There is very limited eye contact with them and interaction (laughs, smiles). She basicly ignores people, even when they call her name. Family members that we see occasionally get the "talk to the hand" attitude. She is shy and won't go near them. Even after spending 4 days with my parents on vacation, she still won't let them in her world. She will warm up a little and sit a lap, but it has to be on her terms. She will climb up on you if she see something she wants, not to cuddle. She just seems so closed off to me. She isn't this way with Brad and I or the boys. However, if she doesn't want to do something, like be held or cuddle, forget about it! We have known from the beginning that she is very strong willed. She will also ignore us when we call her name at times. But say "popsicle" softly and she whips her head around :) Overall, Grace has these walls that won't come all the way down. Any advice???

So, we're a few months behind you, so I'm speaking completely from mommy gut, but I really think it sounds like she's doing amazing - and she just couldn't get any cuter! Maybe the bonding with outsiders (even close family) will just take a bit more time? And I think that's still pretty age appropriate (I remember our boys being the same way).

As far as her speech, I don't know - maybe call a early intervention place and see if they'll come and evaluate her? Even if she doesn't qualify for services, perhaps they could give you some pointers? It might just be that her gross motor is moving ahead quickly so she's spending less time on speech?

Oy, this turned into a novel...sorry!

Okay you get me twice today!
First off Ava was three in July and weighs 26 .5 lbs.!!!! She is a little poot!
Ava still has delays in speech. Think about how long these girls were in an orphanage and hearing a different language. Ava had global delays in almost all areas. Now she has has only articulation issues. Her receptive language skills are awesome . We had early childhood intervention come out and help us two months after being home. It was great because they taught me to implement some speech techniques that I had not thought about. Today we aged out of ECI but qualified for only 30 mins. a week at the local elementary through the district for articulation. We are also supplementing with private speech for 30 mins /1x a week. Ava is doing great!
Do not worry ! She is going to do great but call early childhood intervention in your area. They can teach you all kinds of great things!

Hi - My daughter was adopted from Russia and brought home in Sept 2009. She is 26 months now. She didn't start talking until she was almost 2, so don't fret. I think it's a language thing, remember, they had to start from scratch and they are a year behind! It will start slow, we started with "cow" or the cat's name "uey" over & over, then slow it started coming. Now we are talking in 3 word sentences and getting better all the time!
Good luck your girl is a doll!

Really, could she get any cuter. FYI, Dana has been having the same concerns about speech - Lena and Grace seem to be on the same track. Ironic - Lena will also sit in time out (Dana thinks because she is too much of a princess to climb off the little chair herself...but wants to be lifted).

Wouldn't you have loved to spend an hour (or a day) in the baby room? It's a good sign that the children born with a strong will don't have their spirits broken. A lit up everytime her caregiver came to get her - so great to see.
