Nate is a very strong student and always tries his best. I can never get him to just "write anything down" to move on from something too difficult. He takes a lot of pride in his work.
Well, we just found out this week that a poem he wrote in school was selected to be published in a book with all children's writing. His class assignment was to sit in the school courtyard and write a poem about what he saw. It truly is a beautiful poem!
The Fall Courtyard
A lone leaf
Paler than the palm
Of my hand
Lays in the sunlight
Trying to get a good tan
The few leaves that
Are still on trees
Are shivering
Holding on for dear life
Barely resisting the soft breeze
My paper is a hummingbird
Flapping frantically but failing
To pry itself out of my clipboard's iron grip
The slow breeze is
Softer than
A peacock's feather
But colder than
My sister's hands
After she played with ice
The white mum's leaves are shaking
Like a little kid who just had a nightmare
I love the part about his "sister's hands". Grace is always in the freezer getting ice cubes!
Great poem, Nate! We are very proud of you!

Awesome poem, Nate :). Congratulations.
Wow, that is GREAT! Way to go, getting it published and all. Pretty soon I'll be reading his work at the book store here in Chi town!
I...am...speechless!! i can't believe nater wrote this! so deep and pretty. *tears* he's getting too grown up!
Oh my goodness! I am soooooo impressed! Who does he take that after??? Dx
All I can say is that when he starts writing love letters to girls, they won't stand a chance. That is a truly beautiful poem, Nate!
That really is an amazing poem! The part about Grace's cold hands made me laugh ~ getting ice cubes out of the freezer is Clara's new obsession. :)
